Texture Tape 016

Leagueplay

We're back in Yorkshire again as Sheffield-based Leagueplay puts pedal to the metal for this week's mix: an invigorating dose of drum and bass that'll have you feeling like you're racing down an empty freeway.

What were your plans or ideas going into the mix?

I usually don’t properly plan mixes – I find that if everything is kinda locked down the whole mix sounds a bit plastic. So usually I just pick a track to start with and then see what happens..

What have been your favourite recent releases?

Program by Chase & Status is one of the best tunes I’ve ever heard. I’ll be walking around listening to it on headphones and will reload it about 4 times cause the first drop slaps so hard! Breakage’s new EP Liff Up is also sick – he’s doing mad things with his stripped-down jungle. I wish I could write drums like that ☹.

Is there a show you would love to go back in time and experience?

Would have loved to have seen Marcus Intalex live before he passed. I reckon at least 10% of my entire library are his tunes, he created such an amazing sound. Rest in Peace.

How do you organise your music?

Because drum and bass has so many sub-genres, I usually organise my tracks by that (Neuro, half-time, jungle etc). I also usually have a couple of playlists with all my most recent downloads so I don’t buy something and then forget it ever existed.

A track you've always wanted to play out but never had the chance?

Archangel by Burial. I’ve always been really into that early dubstep and garage sound but it never really works in a high energy set. Someday tho…

Your dancefloor saver?

Roll The Dice by Shy FX for the obvious reason that is has Lily Allen singing over drum and bass. Nuff said.

Your favourite club?

In Sheffield it’s got to be Yellow Arch, one of the outright coolest venues I’ve ever been to. In London I love the Pickle Factory, probably because it’s a 5 min walk from my house, but also because it used to hold the amazing Soul in Motion nights. Check them out, they are doing bits for the scene right now.

How do you think the drum and bass scene has shifted (if at all) in recent years?

I think that while different sounds are more prevalent in different years, there is still a universal respect for all sounds, however old they are. Drum and bass is deffo getting more comercialised, with groups like SASASAS and Hybrid Minds attracting loads of new listeners. Hybrid Minds have done especially well attracting girls to dnb, which has always been a very male dominated genre.

What song would soundtrack your funeral?

Come Down to Us by Burial. I’ve got that shit tattooed on my arm. Have a listen if you are yet to understand.

And on a lighter note, the tune you'll still be listening to in 50 years?

Rasta We Rasta by Danny Red. Wait for the bass to kick in…
