Texture Tape 020
This week's tape sees Berlin via Guildford selector NYDS glide through atmospheric breakbeats, before settling into the groove with some bouncin' house and techno pumpers.
What were your ideas or plans going into the mix?
The main plan was to have something playful that can function in many different listening scenarios but most importantly something that is reflective of me and the music I like to play. In the past I have gone to record mixes and had a long ambient intro covering the first 20 minutes or so but it just seems disingenuous for me to approach a mix like that because it’s not what I play out out or what I listen to.
What have been your favourite recent releases or events?
The new self-titled Barker release on Ostgut Ton does more than hit the spot (notably 'Kickboxing'). The guy's output is just so consistently unbelievable and you can tell he’s just genuinely doing whatever he wants.
And I really enjoyed Oneman at Patterns Brighton from Emergency Room - shoutout to those fellas.
What’s the music scene like where you’re from??
Non-existent (apart from one great club Thirty3hz in Guildford), but there is a wealth of great producers and DJs around me which is nice. I moved to Berlin last September and that’s certainly a large change.
Is there a show you would love to go back in time and experience again?
Bambounou in Panorama Bar. More specifically the bit that he took his shirt off and started swinging it around haha, it’s moments like that which make you overcome with joy when you remember them - just sublime energy.
How do you organise your music?
I’ve spent hours coming up with all these schemes and methods to organise my music in the most foolproof ways possible but in the end I just keep going back to just doing it by date because I’m lazy and never stick to things.
A track you've always wanted to play out but never had the chance?
Cocktail Party Effect - 'Lemons'. Because I don’t think anyone’s ever ready for it
Your dancefloor saver?
DJ Swagger - 'Atter Action'. Deploy with care.
Your favourite club?
Griessmuehle. Exceptional club with probably the best programming in Berlin. Definite must for anyone visiting.
The soundtrack to your funeral?
The Cure - 'Lovesong'. Apologies for the dreary choice
And on a lighter note, the tune you'll still be listening to in 50 years?
Arctic Monkeys - '505'. Imagine getting bored of this one.
Reptant - Transcendents From The Outer Sphere
Realitycheck - Silent Motion
Joy O - SIN PALTA
Ryan James Ford - Aylith Yard
DHS - I Am Your Control
Son of a Sound & Jus-Ed - I Have You on My Side
