Morwell

Morwell eases us in with a couple of real chin-strokers before turning it up to 11 with some delicious breaks. This mix is an excellent showcase of Morwell's left-field sensibilities and serious production chops - here, we have a number of prime cuts from his recent musical endeavours, including both remixes and originals.

What were your ideas or plans going into the mix?

I wanted to showcase some new and forthcoming tracks by me and favourite producers and friends, starting slow and dreamy and building up in speed and energy. There’s a focus on breaks, basslines, vocals, and tunes that combine melancholy with glints of euphoria.

You’ve done some killer remixes of tracks by the likes of Solange, Loraine James and Ariana Grande. How does your creative approach when making remixes compare to your approach to your own productions?

Thanks! With remixes, the best way by far is if I can avoid listening to the original even once. This frees me up to hear and re-use the sounds in new ways. I’ve started following a similar idea in my own productions. If I listen through and choose a section of a vocal or beat or whatever to sample, I’ll tend to pick the most obvious part. So instead of doing that, I’m now doing more cutting things out at random, to end up with more unexpected results.

How do your production and DJing styles interact - do you aim to produce tracks that could fit into your sets?

I used to play in bands and occasionally DJ, had more than 10 years away from it all, and since coming back I am only producing, but very happy with that. I’m busy with family stuff and live quite out of the way, so it’s the best way to get involved in the time I have. I’m happy when the tracks make it into other people’s sets and mixes and radio shows. Thanks to the combined blessing and curse of social media I can follow a lot of what goes on without stepping out into the real world - it’s a slightly weird way to do things but I’m happy that this brave new world makes it possible.

What have been your favourite recent releases and events?

Some of my favourites are in this mix – 'Love Crush' by Heavee from Chicago has this really special kind of melancholic energy. El Blanco Nino from NYC has been doing these amazing jungle edits lately, one of these closes the mix. I love LMajor’s dark rave sounds and there are 2 of his tracks here. Events-wise it’s a long time since I was anywhere in person, but online Sherelle’s famous / infamous Boiler Room was a real highlight of 2019.

What’s the music scene like where you’re from?

I live in the middle of nowhere now, where it’s mostly ambient – the sound of the river and the wind in the trees. I’m originally from Zagreb, Croatia, and it’s been exciting to discover that there’s a now a scene there around VOLTA, run by Kornet and N/OBE.

Is there a show you would love to go back in time and experience again?

A squat party at The Dungeons, Lea Bridge Road, in the early 2000s - there was this exciting and dangerous feeling that anything could happen.

How do you organise your music?

Lots of mp3s in folders and sub-folders. And reggae / dancehall vinyl sitting in boxes feeling a bit unloved.

A track you've always wanted to play out but never had the chance?

I suppose I’d like to play ANY of my own new tracks...

Your favourite club?

The club for me these days is people’s shaky Insta stories and those BR and Keep Hush videos – it’s hard to pick a favourite ;)

The soundtrack to your funeral?

'Skeng' by the Bug feat. Flowdan & Killa P

And on a lighter note, the tune you'll still be listening to in 50 years?

'Skeng' by the Bug feat. Flowdan & Killa P :)

Lastly, any upcoming projects we should keen an eye out for?

My next release is a set of remixes of my last EP, the Eyes On Me EP. I’m happy and grateful to have some incredible producers on board, all taking the tracks in really creative different directions, including DJ Earl (Teklife) and Loraine James (Hyperdub). You can hear two of the remixes in the mix – from Alec Pace (All Centre) and Kiki D (Worst Behavior).
