Texture Tape 028
Scud blesses the 28th instalment of our mix series with a mesmerising mix of sounds guaranteed to stimulate your quarantined ears. The Dad Tracks co-founder skitters between scuzzy industrial and jagged broken beats and footwork, before wrapping things up with some ambient to ease the soul.
What were your ideas or plans going into the mix?
I’ve been living in Bristol since September of last year and had a monthly show on 1020 radio. So I kind of wanted to look back on the radio shows/DJ sets I’ve done whilst here. Hence a lot of the tunes were from previous shows or DJ sets, and as Scud I’ve been playing a lot of Ambient and Experimental music as well so I wanted to include as much of that as possible rather than recording a straight up club mix.
Tell us about Dad Tracks Only.
So it all started with a simple facebook group of the same name with my friends from back home in Essex. Essentially it was a place where we could share the best music we had been stumbling across, along with some nice dad based humour. Then more recently we wanted to run a club night in Bristol, and wanted it to be a bit of an extension of the group – we wanted to try and have a bit of a community feel about it, where we booked our friends to play rather than big name DJs and charged £3 on the door. Kind of like more of a well organised house party but at a venue with a real soundsystem. We ended up somehow selling out after Harry Lee’s incredible marketing campaign, which included a full backstory of a father named Roy Savage accidentally finding himself in the throws of an LSD trip and being locked in a Homebase overnight - the full version of which can be found on the Dad Tracks Only facebook page.
How do your production and DJing styles interact - do you aim to produce tracks that could fit into your sets?
Most of the time when I make a track it’s not with any specific use in mind – more just because I’ve had an idea of some sort and wanted to flesh it out. Although I’ll usually make stuff that’s similar to the music I like listening to and playing out, so they often end up fitting in anyway.
What have been your favourite recent releases and events?
I’ve been listening to Kali Malone a lot recently, as well as the recent Ben Vida album Reducing The Tempo To Zero. Can’t go wrong with some well produced drone! As for club-ish music I’ve been loving pretty much everything released by SVBKVLT.
What’s the music scene like where you’re from?
I’m originally from Chelmsford in Essex which doesn’t have a music scene. Although Squarepusher is from Chelmsford so that’s a pretty big deal right! Also I’ve picked up some real bangers from intense records near Chelmsford train station in the past but that is about it.
Your dancefloor saver?
Clouds – Optic has been in the bank for a while and always boots off.
How do you organise your music?
Not very well, my folders are a complete mess. Mostly I’ll just make new playlists for each mix, for clubby stuff I’ll arrange by BPM.
Is there a show you would love to go back in time and experience again?
Oh there are too many. Most recently I would say either Shackleton’s live set at Timedance in Bristol, or maybe also Holly Herndon at Simple Things. Total Freedom playing at Trance Party 10 was also incredible.
A track you've always wanted to play out but never had the chance?
Lyra Valenza – Reality Blizz. I think if deployed at the right time it would be outrageously euphoric, alas I’m still waiting for the moment to come.
Your favourite club?
Probably Corsica Studios, if only they would sell fewer tickets and make it slightly less crowded.
The soundtrack to your funeral?
I simply can’t answer this question as I plan on living forever, but maybe something like The Carter Family – No Depression In Heaven.
And on a lighter note, the tune you'll still be listening to in 50 years?
Got to be something by Grouper, maybe Alien Observer. Still remains one of my favourite albums of all time after years of repeated listens and I imagine it will be for the foreseeable future.
