This week we have Gracie T blessing us with a mix that'll have you pining for the club. The rapid shifts between jersey club thumping and hyperpop twinkling provide a well needed jolt of energy to keep our spirits up during a difficult time. Perfect for an at home boogie!
What were your ideas or plans going into the mix?
I decided to put the mix together using tunes that I listen to all the time but I don’t necessarily mix them in sets. I wanted to make a textually fun and interesting mix with loads of cute vocals and trappy beats. It features tunes from Sheffield based producers, Symrun, thomas, Olson and new tunes from Yazzus, Jessy Lanza, Hudson Mohawke and Rico Nasty.
You do a lot of work showcasing under-represented artists. Tell us about The Beatriarchy and Day Timers.
Myself and Kitty (Kitsta) founded The Beatriarchy after being absolutely sick of feeling like we didn’t belong in the online music community and being constantly mansplained on tune share groups. The Beatriarchy is a safe space for womxn, LGBTQ+, Black, Asian and minority ethnic members of the music community to promote their work, share tunes and grow their network of like minded people. Day Timers is my collective of South Asian creatives, we make desi inspired beats, support upcoming creatives and raise awareness of the issues people of colour face in the music industry. We recently guested on Manara’s BBC Asian Network show, which was sick!
You also run Sheffield’s Foodhall Radio Station – tell us about how that started up and what it’s all about.
FCR runs out of the wonderful Foodhall, a multi-award winning community kitchen and public dining space that has done some amazing work during the pandemic. We planned our launch for a very long time but then COVID hit and we decided to launch remotely as a way for the community to put their energy into something fun. It’s a fantastic station with a brilliant roster of residents broadcasting every weekend.
What have been your favourite recent releases and events?
So many amazing tunes have come out recently! A few artists that have been doing bits recently are Yazzus, Diessa, DJ Soyboi, Provhat Rahman, M75 and Darama - definitely check them out!
How do your production and DJing styles interact - do you aim to produce tracks that could fit into your sets?
I’m still very much a beginner at producing! I’d love to make tunes properly when I have the headspace and time to devote to it but I’m not quite there yet. The tracks I eventually produce will most definitely slot into my sets, I think there’s nothing cooler than spinning your own tunes in sets. The Beatriarchy also collaborated with Shifting Spheres on a production support group called beatshifter, which I’d recommend to any producers!
What’s the music scene like where you’re from?
I’m from the North East and there’s not really much of a music scene there that I’ve been involved in but I’ve lived in Sheffield for around 4 years now and the scene here is amazing. The underground music scene in Sheff is incredibly supportive and I’ve met some of my greatest friends through gigging in this city.
Your dancefloor saver?
Literally anything by DJ Rashad (RIP).
How do you organise your music?
I organise my music by genre/sub-genre and BPM for easy scrolling on CDJs. In my 2 years of DJing I’ve collected almost 5000 tunes and a good organisation system is key haha!
Is there a show you would love to go back in time and experience again?
Force Majeure: Anz, Lockhart, Daebak and Korra at Hatch in 2019 was probably the best event I’ve ever been to, really intimate BYOB vibe and afters lasted well into the next day.
A track you've always wanted to play out but never had the chance?
'Kitana' by Princess Nokia.
The soundtrack to your funeral?
Anything by Ms. Lauryn Hill or The Fugees.
And on a lighter note, the tune you'll still be listening to in 50 years?
'6 de Espadas' by Golden.
Lastly, any upcoming projects we should keep an eye out for?
